Fishing

Fishing on Cleveley MereCleveley Mere is a beautiful, peaceful 23-acre lake surrounded by fields, woodland and the River Wyre. The first trout were introduced in 1967 and have thrived in the lake ever since. There is a natural water in flow to the lake, which is rich in fly and insect life, providing excellent growing conditions for rainbow and brown trout weighing up to 15 lbs, which are supplemented by stocking at regular intervals.

Baot House at Cleveley MereThe maximum depth of the lake is 14 ft with the north eastern basin varying from 2-6 ft and the west, centre and southern sectors varying from 6-14 ft, creating a rich and varied fishery. The full extent of the fishing can best be enjoyed from the mere's 14 well-maintained boats or from strategically placed piers and casting platforms around the banks.

The feeder pond and a netted section of the north east corner of the lake adjacent to the reception centre are more heavily stocked to encourage children, beginners and provide a fly-casting tuition area.

The Fishery

FishingThe fishery is opened throughout the year. During the colder winter months sinking lines, lures and weighted nymphs are the general order of the day, although prolonged mild spells can see fish surface feeding on small midges. The main buzzer hatches start in March and extend until November with a peak in June. Sport can be fast and furious with plenty of surface activity. Both standard pupa patterns and emerger styles such as Shipmans work well, as do Pheasant tails, Sedge and GRHE.

FishingFrom early July through the dog days of August the fishing becomes more challenging, requiring very fine lines, small flies (16-20) and a range of techniques including the use of Damsel, nymphs, daddies, buzzers, beetles and small (18-20) CDCs and dry black flies, Diawl Bach, Griffin Gnat and Shipmans.

During hot weather the fish are lying deeper and feeding heavily on daphnia, with the main surface activity in the early morning or evening.

By late August the fish are on the move and surface sport is the main attraction, requiring a variety of fly, including appetizer, fritz, cat's whisker, buzzers and nymphs. The buzzer hatch continues through into November.
